Women’s Day is about celebrating the struggles, the triumphs, the discussions, and the strong women that have made the world a better place. Throughout all the stances and wins in women’s history, a big problem across the board to present day is harassment. In the streets and online bullying is all harassment – but a big player in the digital world is call and text harassment. We decided to take a deeper dive this year and analyze what is happening.

Truecaller helps people around the world identify unknown numbers and builds a community of people who actively block sales, fraud, and harassment calls. From our recent study, women around the world block 19% more unwanted calls than men, and it sometimes takes a community to identify the culprits and move forward in solving the issue.

We wanted to determine if women or men were receiving more spam calls in different regions in comparison to which gender was reporting.

stats

In the report, we found that in some countries men were receiving more spam calls than women, but women were taking more action to report more unwanted calls than men. For example, men in India receive 4% more unwanted calls than women on a monthly basis, but women are reporting 18% more unwanted calls than men.

In the case of some regions, like Libya, women are receiving 69% more spam calls than men and reporting 61% more spam calls as well.

Standing up to Harassment Calls by Calling It Out

Around the world, women Truecaller users are calling out their harassers by reporting 19% more unwanted calls than men. This could be for various reasons, but we see the same trend happening in regions around the globe.

It sometimes takes a community to identify the culprits and move forward in solving the issue.

The report indicates that when a woman receives an unwanted call or SMS, she is more likely to try and “punish” or call out the harasser by reporting the number to Truecaller.

What happens when numbers are reported in Truecaller?

When a number in Truecaller is reported a certain amount of times by various users, it can be auto-blocked for all Truecaller users and will show the number of times the number has been reported. This can help women users refrain from picking up a call from an unknown number, and it can also help all users stay clear of potential scams, frauds and various bullying or harassment.
