Truecaller was present at this year’s biggest Microsoft conference in Sweden, TechDays 2015. Three of our Windows engineers were present at the event, and two of them also held a presentation about creating awesome apps for emerging markets.

TechDays is held in numerous different countries across the world and is organized by Microsoft to create a place and venue for Professionals to learn, get inspired and meet other professionals, companies and Microsoft itself.

Truecaller was invited to talk about how we create apps for emerging markets. A topic where we have learnt a lot over the years, things we were happy that we could share with the rest of the community.

On the second day of TechDays 2015 Hassaan and Ioana from Windows team presented the session that was live recorded and is now available on Channel9.

During the session we focused on sharing our knowledge about the emerging markets and how you need to tailor to their specific needs.

One important aspect that we talked about was how to treat and deal with translations. Internally we’re using a self-developed tool called AutoPlay, this tool generates screenshots for a pre-defined set of scenarios using all the available languages in the app. We showed briefly what is required for you to start using the same tool, and where to get it. This helps you to easily identify and fix UI errors created by translations being different from your development environment. The tool is available on GitHub.

The topics we touched are how UI, network and hardware differ substantially between emerging markets and the western markets. For instance dual SIM is a big thing in emerging markets, whereas it’s something extremely rare here in Sweden.
