A Letter from our Co-Founders to Truecaller Users

As we say goodbye to 2014, we are setting ourselves some New Year resolutions and reflecting on our achievements. But we’re not just looking back at the past year – because every story has a beginning, and ours starts in 2009 in a small apartment in Stockholm, Sweden.

As we say goodbye to 2014, we are setting ourselves some New Year resolutions and reflecting on our achievements. But we’re not just looking back at the past year – because every story has a beginning, and ours starts in 2009 in a small apartment in Stockholm, Sweden.

Our story began when we both had great difficulty identifying numbers when our friends or distant relatives would call from abroad. Who wouldn’t want to know who is calling? We decided to do something about this lack of not knowing who’s calling, and create a simple app to solve the problem. Before app stores became so popular, the first Truecaller app was uploaded onto a forum. A flicker turned into a bushfire when 10,000 people from different corners of the world responded and said ‘Yes, I need this too.’

This was the first time our ideas became our ambition, and that ambition turned us into co-founders of what would become one of the fastest growing startups in 2014.

Our passion does not stop with technology. This year we voyaged all over the world to personally meet up with our users and understand how Truecaller can become part of a smartphone user’s daily habits. We believe the most important part of creating an app is not just what it looks like, or how it functions – it is how useful it is for the people it serves.

Users are at the heart of Truecaller
Truecaller is evolving. We understand the impact it has on developing countries: we hear about it at events; we see it in our talented team that keeps on growing; and we feel it in each line of code we write. We want to be part of your smartphone experience. As technology becomes more advanced, our users know that Truecaller’s capabilities will grow in sync with the mobile world.

For the first time in developing countries, people are picking up their mobile phones and becoming excellent communicators simply by using Truecaller. Country by country barriers to knowledge are quickly eroding with the advancement of the internet, apps, and social media. It is only natural that our ability to recognize who wants to get in touch with us should be as clear and true.

Our users have expectations that Truecaller will provide an intelligent, and useful service they can trust, that will break down the barriers of a typical standardized phonebook app. We are all about creating a unique service that covers all the bases of our user’s daily calling habits. Truecaller is personalized to each user, and we will continue to create a service that is relevant and catered to each person’s contact needs.

Our idea may have started as something small, but in 2014, the impact has been monumental.

In 2014:

  • We more than doubled our users and now stand 100 million strong.
  • We got backed by some of the most prominent investors in the world that believe in our dream, and with that, received over $80 million in funding from Sequoia Capital, Atomico, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
  • We had some of the most experienced and influential tech leaders join the company’s board.
  • We released Truedialer, a service that replaces the old and boring dialer.
  • We had over 30 people, 35 translators, and 30 brand ambassadors join Truecaller.
  • We won numerous awards including ‘Swedish Company of the Year.’

We believe that 2015 will be filled with roads yet untraveled, and challenges to overcome, but with all of your support, we know that anything is possible. Throughout the company, we are firing on all cylinders and dreaming bigger. There is so much to be proud of and even more to look forward to.

Our resolution for the coming year is to become a staple app when a new smartphone is powered on for the first time – we want Truecaller and Truedialer to be one of the primary apps all smartphone users want to help jumpstart and maintain their smartphone experience.

We say goodbye to 2014 in high spirits as we take the time to tick off the final items on checklists, enjoy the festivities with our family and friends, and hope that next year will bring success in all our lives and yours as well.

We’ve had an amazing year across the board. Thank you for the part you’ve all played – now let’s make some dreams come true in 2015!
