Over the weekend, Sweden became the victim to hundreds of accounts of a telephone scam from multiple numbers beginning with +242 (the Congo). Swedish mobile carrier, 3, issued an alert to their customers explaining the situation:

If you see such a number in the missed call and do not know you have family, friends or colleagues in that part of Africa, do not call back. Only if you call back, you risk some unwanted expenses.

What Should I Do?

  1. Tell your friends, family, and colleagues to download Truecaller to help identify these numbers and block them. (m.truecaller.com)
  2. If you receive a call from a +242 number you do not recognize, do not pick up the phone or call back.
  3. Mark it as spam through Truecaller’s call-filter.

By marking this number as spam, it will automatically be listed in Truecaller’s localized spam list if enough people in your country mark it as spam, too. By doing this, you are helping other people who might be affected by the scam in your own country.
