Last year especially during the peak times of demonstrations in the Arab World, there was a significant increase of number lookups with Truecaller from the Middle East by almost 100%, as compared to the previous days of the uprising. A user from Jordan tells us:

As one of the most vibrant regions, and one of the most important hubs for the world?s economical and political affairs, the Arabic speaking countries located in the Middle East also has one of the highest engaged telephone users in the world. It is predicted that by 2016, the Middle East will overtake Europe as the second largest region for mobile subscription. And it is the geopolitical areas where the smartphone penetration is the highest.

The international phone traffic carried out by traditional carriers is increasing and has been doing so for the last 10-15 years. As much as 438 billion minutes were spent on conversations between people from different parts of the world. If one add on the amount of phone traffic via Skype and other VoIP services, which is somewhere in the proximity of 125 billion minutes, the traffic volume is growing at a vigorous pace. Divided on the average length of a phone call, means that close to 340 billions calls between countries is taking place on a yearly basis.

?Just in November last year I got more than 5-6 international calls a day, and it was impossible to know who it was. Calling back to the number wasn?t an option, because it?s too expensive to make an international call. So I used Truecaller to find out whom it was who called me, and it turned out it was my uncle from Libya who tried to call me?
